Eight Tar Heels To Appear In Minor League Playoffs

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina will be well represented in the Minor League Baseball playoffs this week as eight Tar Heels will look to lead their squads to championships. The second pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, Dustin Ackley, will be a key piece for the Tacoma Rainiers in the Pacific Coast League playoffs against the Sacramento River Cats.
Triple A
Pacific Coast League
Dustin Ackley - Tacoma Rainiers
• The Rainiers face the Sacramento River Cats in the opening round with the winner facing either the Memphis Redbirds or Oklahoma City RedHawks in the final.

• Ackley is hitting .274 in 52 games with the Rainiers with 37 runs scored, 21 extra base hits (12 - 2B, 4 - 3B, 5 - HR) and 23 RBI playing as the everyday second baseman. Following the postseason Ackley will join the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League.

Josh Horton - Midland RockHounds
• The RockHounds will take on the Frisco RoughRiders in the opening round of the Texas League Playoffs with the winner facing either the Northwest Arkansas Naturals or the Springfield Cardinals.

• Horton is hitting .286 in 108 games with the RockHounds tallying 18 doubles, three triples and three home runs. Horton has been the everyday shortstop for the RockHounds this season. Was named to the Texas League postseason all-star team.

Brian Moran - West Tenn Diamond Jaxx
• The Diamond Jaxx take on the Tennessee Smokies in the first round of the Southern League playoffs with the winner taking on either the Jacksonville Suns or the Mobile BayBears.

• Moran was called up to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on Aug. 30 and has made a pair of appearances out of the bullpen after posting 1.42 and 1.34 ERAs at High-A and A ball. Was a Midwest League All-Star.

Adam Warren - Trenton Thunder
• The Thunder will face the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs with the winner facing either the Altoona Curve or the Harrisburg Senators in the title series.

• Warren has made 10 starts for the Thunder after being called up in mid-July. After posting a 7-5 record and a 2.22 ERA for the Tampa Yankees Warren owns a 4-2 mark with a 3.15 ERA for the Thunder, including a 15-strikeout performance in seven shutout innings against Bowie.

Andrew Carignan - Stockton Ports
• The Ports will take on the Modesto Nuts in the opening round of the California League playoffs with the winner facing the San Jose Giants in the second of three rounds.

• Carignan owns a 3-3 record in 30 appearances for the Ports this season. Carignan missed a month of the season due to injury but has yet to allow a run in his last two appearances since coming off the disabled list.
Kyle Seager - High Desert Mavericks
• The Mavericks will face the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in the opening round of the California League playoffs with the winner taking on the Lake Elsinore Storm in the second round.

• Seager has been one of the top hitters in the California League this season hitting .345 in 135 games as a second baseman, third baseman and shortstop. Seager set the California League record for longest hit streak at 32 during the season. Seager added 126 runs scored, 40 doubles, three triples, 14 home runs and 74 RBI during the regular season. Was named a California League postseason all-star.
Carolina League
Kyle Shelton - Winston-Salem Dash
• The Dash captured the division title and will take on the Kinston Indians in the first round of the Carolina League playoffs with the winner facing the Frederick Keys or the Potomac Nationals in the championship round.

• The Stone Crabs will take on the Bradenton Marauders in the opening round of the Florida State League playoffs with the winner facing either the Tampa Yankees or Dunedin Blue Jays in the title round.
