The University of North Carolina gymnastics team will travel on Saturday to Piscataway, N.J. for their second multi-team meet of the season. The Tar Heels will compete against host-team Rutgers, Penn and Brown, starting at 1 p.m.
“Going into this meet our goal is to improve on our performance from last week,” Coach Derek Galvin said. “The team performance on uneven bars and balance beam was exceptional, it was actually a little stronger [than expected], we felt it was possible, but to do that in the first meet was very satisfying because they trained really hard.”
The Tar Heels won their first meet, The George Washington Lindsey Ferris Invitational, but know there is room for improvement. Focus this week in practice has been on enhancing routines, especially on floor and vault.
“We want to bring up the level of our performances as a team; we had some individuals that did exceptionally well,” said Galvin. “Kristin Aloi and Morgan Evans, their floor routines were mid-season caliber. On vault, Morgan [Evans] and Zoya Johnson were at mid-season quality as well. We just need to bring the rest of the line up to that point.”
“We certainly don't want to be peaking right now; we are in a building phase.“
The team will face tough competition from the three other teams in contention. Each features strong individual gymnasts that will require the Tar Heel gymnasts to be in top form.
“We are working on enhancing execution, minimizing reductions. As our endurance builds, the power in our tumbling will get stronger. And on vault we will become more dynamic," said Galvin.
