The North Carolina men's golf team finished in 11th place at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational being played at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Carolina carded a 307 in the final round for a 913 total. Senior Matt Raudenbush led the Tar Heels firing a 2-over-par 74 in the final round.
"Although we went into this tournament as the 12th-ranked team in the field, we are not satisfied with finishing 11th," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "We had a wonderful opportunity to beat some highly ranked teams and did not capitalize. We need to build consistency, confidence and mental toughness. Our practice and qualifying have been very good; we just need to transfer that to game time and play with that same confidence in tournaments."
Raudenbush, from Pine Valley, N.J., finished with a 10-over 226 total to tie for 29th place. Freshman Zach Munroe, from Charlotte, N.C., finished one stroke back at 227 to tie for 35th after posting a 4-over 76. Freshman Brandon Dalinka also carded a 76 in Tuesday's final round. The Newtown, Pa., native finished with a 230 total to finish in 39th place. Michael McGowan, a junior from Southern Pines, N.C., posted a 79 for a 236 total to finish in a tie for 51st while Patrick Barrett, a senior from Pinehurst, N.C., shot an 82 for a 239 total to finish in 54th place.
Texas won the team title by firing a 1-under-par 287 in the final round. The Longhorns started the day tied for second and finished with a 2-under 862 to top the field of 12 teams. Host Ohio State, the second round leader, was the runner up finishing at 14-over 878 after scoring a 304 on Tuesday. Illinois finished third with an 884 total while Kent State finished fourth at 885, UCLA fifth at 886 and Arkansas sixth at 887.
Thomas Peters of Illinois fired an even par 72 to capture the individual title with a 7-under-par 209 total. Tyler Duncan of Purdue and Jordan Spieth of Texas tied for runner-up honors at 5-under 211, two strokes behind Peters. Luke Guthrie of Illinois finished fourth at 3-under 213. TCU's Julien Brun and Arkansas' Ethan Tracy tied for fifth place at 2-under 214 while Dylan Frittelli of Texas finished alone in seventh place at even par 216.
The 54-hole event was played at Muirfield Village Golf Club, using the Memorial Tournament tees which make it a par 72, 7,352-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action Oct. 29-30 when they travel to Greensboro to play in the UNCG Bridgestone Intercollegiate.
