The North Carolina men's golf team tied for ninth place at the Rod Myers Invitational played at Duke University Golf Club. The Tar Heels carded a 909 total after shooting a 310 in Sunday's final round. Carolina senior Patrick Barrett tied for 14th place.
"Today, we continued our final round struggles," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "We need to learn to manage our games better. We hit the ball in the wrong places too many times which hurts any momentum you have. Patrick (Barrett) actually did a wonderful job with his course management this week. He did not hit it great or putt it great; he just managed his misses very well and played consistently."
Barrett, from Pinehurst, N.C., led the Tar Heels in Sunday's final round by firing a 2-over-par 74 for a 220 and a tie for 14th place. Junior Michael McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., shot a 79 on Sunday to tie for 21st place with a 224 total. Matt Raudenbush, a senior from Pine Valley, N.J., carded a final-round 77 to tie for 47th with a 232 total. Two freshmen, Zach Munroe and Bailey Patrick are both from Charlotte and both carded 238 totals to tie for 57th place. Munroe shot an 80 on Sunday while Patrick posted an 84.
Three Tar Heels competed as individuals. Brandon Dalinka, a freshman from Newtown, Pa., fired a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to tie for 38th with a 229 total. Sophomore James Ellis, from Greenville, N.C., finished with a 237 total in 56th place. Clark Palmer, a junior from Augusta, Ga., shot an 83 on Sunday to finish 61st with a 241 total.
Duke topped the 11-team field posting a 3-under-par 861 total as they were the only team to break par in Sunday's chilly final round. The Blue Devils finished nine strokes ahead of runner-up Baylor, which carded a 290 in the final round for an 870 total. Charlotte, the second-round leader, finished third with an 872 total while Iowa finished fourth at 883 and Tulsa placed fifth with an 886 total.
Duke's Julian Suri entered the final round three strokes behind the leader, but fired a 4-under 68, the low round of the tournament, to capture the individual title. Suri's 5-under 211 total was two strokes better than second-round leader Steven Ihm of Iowa who finished at 3-under 213 after carding a 1-over 73 on Sunday. Joakim Mikkelsen of Baylor finished in third place at 1-under 215 while two players, Charlotte's Raoul Menard and Duke Brinson Paolini, tied for fourth place at even par 216.
The 54-hole event was played Sunday at Duke University Golf Club which features a par 72, 7,136-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action Oct. 10-11 when they travel to Dublin, Ohio, to participate in the Jack Nicklaus Invitational.
"We will have a good week of practice ahead of us and we need to work hard in preparation for playing against some of the best teams in the country at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational," said Sapp.
