Greensboro, N.C. -
The University of North Carolina men's golf team is tied for second place after the first round of play in the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. The Tar Heels shot a 6-over-par 294, and recorded two eagles Friday. Senior Patrick Barrett is tied for first place, firing a 2-under 70 total.
"Today was a solid round in tough weather conditions," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "Everyone was in the round for us and hung tough. We got off to a good start and faltered a bit coming down the stretch so hopefully we will finish stronger tomorrow. Patrick played beautifully and really led the way for us today. Tomorrow will be another cold day and the toughest team will win and hope that ends up being UNC."
Friday's start time was delayed to 11 a.m. due to weather, and the format was changed to 36 holes, 18 played each day.
Barrett, a senior from Pinehurst, N.C., is tied for first place with one other player. He recorded two birdies on holes four and ten, and also hit an eagle on hole 11. Junior Clark Palmer, from Augusta, Ga., is tied for 20th, recording a 2-over-par 74, shooting birdies on holes four and 18. Three Tar Heels, Brandon Dalinka, Matt Raudenbush, and Michael McGowan, follow Palmer by one stroke and are tied for 30th place, each with a 3-over 75. Dalinka, a freshman from Newtown, Pa., and Raudenbush, a senior from Pine Valley, N.J., each recorded two birdies. Junior McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., also fired an eagle on hole 11.
UNC is tied for second after shooting a 3-over 75. They trail South Carolina's 291 by three strokes and are tied with Virginia Tech. Mississippi State is in fourth place, one shot behind UNC and Virginia Tech, with a 7-over-par 295 while host UNCG is in fifth, recording an 8-over 296.
Tied with UNC's Barrett is NC State's Albin Choi at a 2-under 70. Six players are tied for third place at 2-under 71 - Sam Daley from Iowa State, Dykes Harbin from South Carolina, Lee Heaton from Mississippi State, Andy Knox from UNCG, Will Murphy from South Carolina, and Matt Thompson from Michigan.
The final round of the 36-hole event will be played Sunday at Forest Oaks Country Club, which features a par 72, 7,212-yard layout.
