CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams turned in dominating performances on Alumni Weekend, downing the Maryland Terrapins at Koury Natatorium Saturday to remain undefeated in ACC dual meet action this season.
In the home opener for both teams, the UNC men defeated Maryland 180-119 while the Tar Heel women triumphed by a 178-121 count. Carolina is now 4-1 overall on both sides of the ledger and 3-0 in ACC dual meets. The Maryland women fell for the first time this season after recording a pair of wins while the Terrapins' men's squad fell to 0-3.
"It was a good performance for both of our teams, especially coming in front of so many alumni and parents," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "We expected a real fight from the Maryland women so getting off to a great start and building a lead helped us get some separation so it didn't go down to the wire as I expected.
"Stephanie Peacock and Laura Moriarty were excellent again today each winning three events. We had a real balanced performance on the men's side against an improving Maryland team. Dominick Glavich chipped in with a pair of individual wins and David MacDonald was outstanding on the boards. We had nine different guys win individual events for us today. All in all, it was a great way to finish off the weekend with the Alumni here for our Champions Circle dinner and the dedication of the Koury Natatorium memorabilia area."
For the second straight week, Peacock swept her individual events, again pulling off a back-to-back doubles in the 1000 freestyle and 200 freestyle. She went near season best times in both events, winning in 9:58.17 and 1:47.90. She also won the 500 freestyle in 4:50.82. Laura Moriarty was also a three-event winner as she swept top honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.22), 200 breaststroke (2:16.71) and 400 IM (4:19.96). She also swam the breaststroke leg on UNC's winning 200 medley relay team.
Steve Cebertowicz led the Carolina men as he cruised to victory in the 50 freestyle and swam a leg on the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relays which both emerged victorious. Freshman Dominick Glavich had season best times in the 200 fly at 1:47.63 and the 100 fly at 49.91 in winning two events while senior David MacDonald had a season best score on the three-meter board with 412.25 points while also winning the one-meter event with 341.85 points.
UNC will return to action when it plays host to the annual Nike Cup at Koury Natatorium November 17-19. Prelims begin each day at 10 a.m. with finals each night at 6 p.m.
