BLACKSBURG, Va.- Sophomore Ariel Roberts claimed second place in the women's pentathlon to set a new school record and lead the Tar Heels on the first day of competition at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet is being held Thursday through Saturday at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.
Roberts took second out of 14 competitors and finished in the top eight for each of the five events, including a first-place finish in the high jump with a height of 5-10 3/4 that tied the ACC Championship pentathlon record set by NC State's Mattie Bethea in 2009. Robert's overall score of 3,916 points broke senior Gabby Gioia's record of 3,894 points set earlier this month at the GaREAT Collegiate Invitational in Geneva, Ohio. Freshmen Hannah Daly (3,064 points, 12th) Tristine Johnson (3,045 points, 13th) also competed in the women's pentathlon for the first time for Carolina.
Senior Mateo Sossah and sophomores Kenneth Stephens and Chadd Pierce started the first day of competition of the men's heptathlon, competing in the 60 meters, high jump, long jump and shot put. Sossah is in fourth with 3,043 points after today's events, Stephens is in eighth (2,587) and Pierce is currently in ninth (2,505). The heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters.
Live results will be available throughout the meet, and The ACC Network will feature live coverage on TheACC.com on Friday beginning at noon and on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. Coverage for Friday's competition is available here, and coverage for Saturday is available here.
At the 2010 ACC Indoor Championships, the men's team finished just three points behind Florida State to take second, and the women finished seventh. Ten Tar Heels finished with All-ACC honors by claiming a top-eight spot individually or by finishing first in a relay.
