Tar Heels Finish In Seventh Place At Seahawk Intercollegiate

Wilmington, N.C.- The North Carolina men's golf team carded a 311 total in the final round of the Seahawk Invitational, played at the Country Club of Landfall, to finish in seventh place overall with a team total of 916 for the tournament. Sophomore Michael McGowan led the Tar Heels and finished in third place in the individual race.
McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., fired an even par 72 in the final round en route to a 2-over 218 for the tournament, finishing alone in third place. Henry Zaytoun III, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., shot a 3-over 75 in the final round, bringing his tournament total to a 7-over 223, and finished tied for 15th place. Fellow senior, Philip Chauncey, from Durham N.C., finished tied for 36th after tallying a 17-over 233 total. Kevin O'Connell, a senior from Cary, N.C. and freshman, James Ellis, from Greenville, N.C., both finished tied for 60th place.
Tournament host, UNC Wilmington, carded a 15-over 879 total to claim the team title. The Seahawks, who began the day in third place, fired a 296 total in the third round to seal the come-from-behind victory. Liberty University carded a 19-over 883 total and finished in second place overall. Wake Forest University was in sole possession of first place after the first two rounds, followed by East Carolina University, which sat two strokes behind. However, the Daemon Deacons carded a third-round total of 310 and the Pirates carded a 308 team total to finish in a tie for third place.
UNC Wilmington's Thomas Bass captured the individual crown, tallying an even-par 216 total for the tournament. Preston Dembowiak, of Liberty University, carded a 1-over 217 total, to finish in second place. South Carolina's Wesley Bryan and Wake Forest's Charlie Harrison finished tied for third, each carding a 3-over 219 after three rounds. Also accompanying Bass in the top-five were three Seahawk teammates. UNC Wilmington's Ryan Sullivan, Payne McLeod and Michael Taylor all tallied 4-over 220 totals to finish tied for fifth.
The 54-hole event was played at the Country Club of the Landfall, Nicklaus Course, which features a par-72, 6,918-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action March 11-13 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
