CHAPEL HILL - Tyler Zeller, a junior on the North Carolina men's basketball team, has earned Capital One Academic All-District honors, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The honor recognizes student-athletes who excel academically and athletically.
As a first-team selection, Zeller is now in the running for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced on Feb. 22. This is the second year in a row that he has earned Academic All-District honors.
A business administration major with a focus in finance, Zeller has started all 21 games this season for the Tar Heels, now 16-5. He leads the squad in scoring with 14.0 points per game and ranks second in rebounding (7.0 per game), blocks (1.3 per game) and minutes (26.6 per game). He hit career highs in points (27) and rebounds (11) in a win over No. 10 Kentucky earlier this season and also was named to the all-tournament team at the Puerto Rico Tipoff Classic.
Named to the 2010-11 Naismith Preseason Watch List, Zeller was one of 20 collegiate players chosen to train against the U.S. Select Team in Las Vegas in August 2010.
A 7-0 forward from Washington, Ind., Zeller serves as team captain and also represents his squad as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. He has earned spots on both the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's List.
Joining him on the All-District 3 team are Wofford's Brad Loesing, Elon's Drew Spradlin, Old Dominion's Trian Iliadis, and Clemson's Tanner Smith.
