
Charles Cox Takes Sixth At NCAA Indoor Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Senior Charles Cox led Carolina with a sixth-place finish in the men's 400 meters Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day meet held at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium concluded today with the men's team finishing in a tie for 50th with Cox's three points.
Competing at his third NCAA Indoor Championships, Cox entered today's finals of the 400 in eighth after Friday's preliminary heats. Finishing with a time of 47.12, Cox moved up two places to claim eighth and score three points for the Tar Heel men. Yesterday, Cox ran a prelim time of 46.61, which is the fifth fastest time in school history. He also is tied with teammate Clayton Parros for the third best time (46.36) which he ran earlier this season.
On Friday, junior Ashley Verplank dropped three seconds in the women's mile to take over the No. 2 spot in Carolina history with a time of 4:36.87. Verplank had another outstanding race in today's final, dropping even more time as she placed ninth in 4:36.17, just .09 seconds off of a top-eight finish.
Senior Mateo Sossah scored 5,649 points in the men's heptathlon to finish 12th, and freshman Sandi Morris took 11th in the women's pole vault with a height of 13-1 1/2.
The official announcement of All-America honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association will be released Monday at the latest. Beginning this year, there will be First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mention All-America honors.
While the indoor season has come to a close, the Tar Heels will begin their outdoor track and field season next week at the Wake Forest Relays in Winston-Salem, N.C., Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19.
