The University of North Carolina gymnastics team travels to Washington, D.C. this weekend to defend their title as the 2010 EAGL Champions. The meet will begin 2 p.m. Saturday and is hosted by George Washington.
"The team is very excited, very eager to getting up to D.C. We are looking forward to competing at the EAGL Championships," said Head Coach Derek Galvin.
"This is one of our favorites, if not the favorite competition. There is a lot of enthusiasm from a lot of teams."
The Tar Heels won the Championship last year, as well as three other times in the program's history. This season Carolina has an 11-7 record and hopes to win the EAGL to continue on to the NCAA Tournament.
The East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) is comprised of eight different colleges and universities including North Carolina, No. 25 N.C. State, Maryland, New Hampshire, West Virginia, George Washington, Pittsburgh and Rutgers.
"I think it's going to be a very, very close competition this year. Any one of the eight teams could win it. Each team has been much stronger this year than last year," said Galvin. "N.C. State, Maryland each has top teams in the history of their program; New Hampshire, West Virginia are having great years, so it's anybody's meet. It's going to come down to which team can make the least number of major mistakes."
