Tar Heel Golfers Tied For Eighth Place at Schenkel Invitational

The North Carolina men's golf team is tied for eighth place after the first round of the Schenkel Invitational being played at Forest Heights Country Club. The Tar Heels carded a 4-over-par 292 total and were led by Henry Zaytoun III and Michael McGowan who both fired a 2-under 70.
Zaytoun, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., and McGowan, a sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C. are deadlocked in a tie for ninth place going into Saturday's second round. Sophomore Clark Palmer and freshman Sean Jacklin are knotted in a tie for 53rd place. Palmer, from Augusta, Ga., and Jacklin, from Bradenton, Fla., both carded 4-over 76 totals in the first round. Kevin O'Connell, a senior from Cary, N.C., shot a 6-over 78 and is tied for 67th place.
Auburn leads the field of 15 teams after firing a blistering 9-under 279 in the first round. Florida is three strokes back in second place at 6-under 282. LSU is in third place at 1-under 287 while Virginia is fourth at even par 288 and Tennessee is fifth at 1-over 289. Notre Dame and North Florida are tied for sixth place with 291 totals while the Tar Heels are tied with NC State for eighth place with 292 totals.
Bank Vongvanij of Florida grabbed the individual lead by firing a 6-under 66 in Friday's first round while Blayne Barber of Auburn is two strokes back in second place at 4-under 68. Six players are deadlocked in third place at 3-under 69 - Tennessee's Robin Wingardh, Auburn's Niclas Carlsson, Notre Dame's Niall Platt, Florida's Phillip Choi, and LSU's Austin Gutgsell and John Peterson.
The 54-hole event is being played at Forest Heights Country Club which features a par 72, 6,947-yard layout. Live scoring is available throughout the event at Golfstat.com.
