Carolina Set For Showdown With Stanford Saturday

SPOKANE, Wash. --- North Carolina will play in its 15th all-time regional semifinal game Saturday when the fifth-seeded Tar Heels face top-seeded Stanford at Spokane Arena at 11:32 p.m. ET. Carolina is 28-8 on the year after an 86-74 win over Kentucky Monday night in Albuquerque, N.M. Stanford, an automatic qualifier from the Pac-10 Conference, is 31-2 on the season following a 75-49 home win over St. John's in the second round Monday. UNC is ranked No. 14 in the AP poll and No. 14 in the coaches' poll. Stanford is ranked No. 2 in both polls.

STANFORD SERIES NOTES
• North Carolina is 0-1 all-time against Stanford, with the lone meeting coming in the 1995 NCAA Tournament.
• The third-seeded Tar Heels lost to second-seeded Stanford, 81-71, in the West Region semifinal in Los Angeles.
CAROLINA IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
• UNC entered the tournament as a No. 5 seed for the second time in school history and the first since 2000. That year the Tar Heels defeated Maine and Rice before falling to Georgia in the regional semifinal.
• Carolina is in the regional semifinals for the 15th time in school history. UNC sports a 6-8 record all-time in the regional semifinal round, and the Tar Heels have won four straight Sweet 16 games.
• The Tar Heels are 23-20 all-time in NCAA Tournament games played away from Chapel Hill.
• Carolina is 39-17 in NCAA Tournament play in 19 appearances under Sylvia Hatchell.
• UNC has an all-time NCAA record of 41-21 in 23 overall appearances.
TAR HEELS IN WASHINGTON
• After not traveling to the state of Washington for 35 seasons prior to 2010, Carolina is playing an NCAA Tournament game in the Evergreen State for the second straight year.
• Last year in Seattle, the 10th-seeded Tar Heels lost to seventh-seeded Gonzaga, 82-76, in the first round of the Sacramento Region.
