CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 17 North Carolina Tar Heels swept a doubleheader from visiting Stony Brook Saturday as the offense exploded for 29 runs in the twinbill. Carolina swept the three-game series with the Seawolves and are 11-1 on the season having won five straight. Up next for Carolina will be a pair of midweek games against Elon (Tue.) and St. John's (Wed.) with both games starting at 5 p.m.
Game 1
Sophomore Chris Munnelly improved to 2-0 at home this season the right-hander tossed 5.2 innings of two-run ball as his offense exploded for 12 runs in the first three innings.
The Tar Heels struck for four runs in the first, a single in the second before a seven-run third inning blew the game open.
Five different hitters tallied at least two hits in the game as Tom Zengel paced the offense with four RBI in the opener. Zengel was not the only Tar Heel to drive in more than one batter as Levi Michael (3), Colin Moran (2), Jacob Stallings (2) and Jesse Wierzbicki (2) each tallied at least two RBI.
Chaz Frank crossed the plate three times, while five other Tar Heels scored two runs in the rout.
Levi Michael drove a pitch to right center in the seventh for his first home run of the spring.
Freshman Hobbs Johnson made his collegiate debut with a scoreless seventh inning for the Tar Heels.
Fellow freshman Brian Holberton made his first collegiate hit a big one as he connected on a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth.
Game 2 Carolina put another crooked number on the scoreboard to open game two as the Tar Heels chased Stony Brook starter Adam Brown before he was able to record an out.
ack-to-back walks to Ben Bunting and Tommy Coyle to lead off the first provided Levi Michael with plenty of potential runs. Michael delivered with his second home run in as many games with a three-run blast to left field providing the Tar Heels with a 3-0 edge.
A pair of doubles from Jacob Stallings and Colin Moran made the score 4-0 before the Seawolves made a call to the bullpen. A pair of groundouts scored Moran from second and provided starter Michael Morin with a five-run cushion.
Stony Brook pulled to within three (5-2) with a pair of runs in the second before knocking Morin out of the ball game in the fifth.
A leadoff walk and back-to-back singles put Morin in trouble, but a liner off his ankle slowed the sophomore down. Pat Cantwell hit a rocket off the foot of Morin and into right field where Seth Baldwin grabbed it and threw a rocket to third base to get the lead runner.
The deflection clearly hobbled Morin a bit before he gave up a single to right field that put runners on the corners. A RBI groundout and a one-run double by William Carmona made the score 5-4 in favor of Carolina before Andrew Smith came on to get the final out of the fifth.
Carmona struck again in the seventh when he blasted a two-run homer over the right field wall pushing Stony Brook in front by a 6-5 margin.
Freshman Tom Zengel quickly turned things around in the bottom half of the seventh as he blasted his first career home run to pull the Tar Heels even at 6-6. The home run extended Zengel's hit streak to 11 games.
Ben Bunting followed with a seeing-eye single through the right side forcing Stony Brook to bring in right-hander Bryan Tatelman. Tommy Coyle blasted a double over the right fielder's head to put runners at second and third for Carolina with Levi Michael coming to the plate.
Michael was issued an intentional pass to load the bases for Stallings who battled from two strikes down to lift a two-run single down the left field line scoring Bunting and Coyle.
Colin Moran opened the flood gates with a two-run double down the right field line making the score 10-6 before Jesse Wierzbicki singled up the middle to score Moran stretching the lead to five.
Tate Parrish came on to work a perfect eighth for the Tar Heels before making way for Cody Penny in the ninth. Penny worked a scoreless ninth as Carolina improved to 11-1 on the year.
