ERIE, COL. -
University of North Carolina golfer Michael McGowan finished tied for 24th place at even par 216 at the NCAA South Central-Colorado Regional. McGowan, competing as an individual, fired a one-over 73 on Saturday and missed the cut to the NCAA Championships.
McGowan, a sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C., carded three bogies and two birdies in the final round. After teeing off on the 10th tee, he finished his front nine at 1-under-par, but had two bogies on his back nine to finish at 1-over for the day.
"This pretty much describes my round today," says McGowan. "On the back nine where I started I had 11 putts, and on my closing nine, I had 18 putts. On my final 9, I missed just two greens which led to bogies on both holes and on the other seven holes I had makeable birdie putts that never met the bottom of the cup. Just one those frustrating days to be a golfer."
Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State captured the individual title at 10-under-par 206 after firing a 3-under 69 in the final round. Scott Pinckney of Arizona State finished one stroke back in second place at 207. Oklahoma State's Talor Gooch placed third at 209 while teammate Sean Einhaus tied for fourth place at 210 along with Georgia's Harris English and Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez. Gonzalez qualified for the individual spot to the NCAA Championships.
Oklahoma State topped the 13-team field with a blistering 31-under-par 833 total. Colorado State was the runner-up at 13-under 851 while Northwestern finished third at 855 and Georgia and Arizona State tied for fourth place with 857 totals. These five teams qualify for the NCAA Championships to be played May 30-June 5 in Stillwater, Okla.
The 54-hole was played at Colorado National Golf Club which features a par 72, 7,758-yard layout.
