CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Andrew DiBitetto, the former interim head men's golf coach at UNC Charlotte, has been named assistant men's golf coach at the University of North Carolina, Director of Athletics Dick Baddour announced on Wednesday. DiBitetto, a native of Rochester, N.Y., played collegiate golf at Charlotte before serving as the 49ers assistant men's golf coach and then interim head coach.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join the Tar Heel family, as I know it is a great honor to be a part of an athletic department that is so rich in its tradition," says DiBitetto. "I want to thank Coach Sapp, Mr. Baddour and Dr. Miller for bringing me on board and for their confidence in me. I look forward to working with Coach Sapp and our student-athletes, and contributing in many ways to bring success to Carolina's golf program."
DiBitetto, a three-time all-conference golfer for Charlotte, played for the 49ers 2004-05 through 2007-08 seasons. He was named to the 2005 All-Conference USA second team and was selected an All-Atlantic 10 performer in 2006 and 2007. He was selected Atlantic 10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2007, was chosen an All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) in 2007 and 2008 and was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Academic Team in 2006 and 2007.
"I am extremely pleased to add Andrew DiBitetto to our golf coaching staff," says head coach Andrew Sapp. "He brings with him some tremendous experiences as both a player and a coach. He was an All-America at Charlotte and as a coach there, he led his team to conference titles. He will be a great recruiter and our Tar Heel golfers will learn a lot from Andrew."
DiBitetto was named an honorable mention GCAA/Ping All-America in 2007 after leading the 49ers to a tie for third place at the NCAA Championships, the school's highest finish in history. He placed ninth at the NCAA Championships in 2007, the best finish ever by a 49ers golfer. DiBitetto was the runner-up at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championships after finishing fifth in 2006. He led the 49ers to three consecutive Atlantic 10 Championships, 2006, 2007, 2008. In 2008, DiBitetto helped lead Charlotte to a consensus #1 national ranking, a win at the Atlantic 10 Championship and a tie for eighth place at the NCAA Championships as the 49ers golf team became the first program in school history to post back-to-back top-10 finishes at NCAAs. While at Charlotte, he set and still holds the record for career tournaments played and consecutive tournaments played (50).
After graduating cum laude with a degree in Business Management, DiBitetto played professionally for six months. He returned to Charlotte as the interim assistant coach in the spring of 2009 and was named the assistant coach in the summer of 2009. DiBitetto remained in that position until December 2010 when he was named the interim head coach for the 49ers.
As either a player or coach, DiBitetto has been a part of six consecutive Atlantic 10 championships, three as a player and three as a coach. The 49ers knotted NCAA Regional appearances the past three years with DiBitetto serving as either assistant coach or interim head coach. They finished seventh at the 2011 Central Regional, tied for sixth at the 2010 NCAA East Regional and tied for seventh place at the 2009 NCAA Southeast Regional. With DiBitetto on the coaching staff, five 49ers were selected to the All-Atlantic 10 team six times and three players were named GCAA Scholar All-Americas four times. In addition, one player (Corey Nagy) was chosen to the GCAA/Ping All-America team twice, honorable mention in 2009 and second team in 2010.
