Hurysz Wins Gold For Team USA

MIRAMAR, Fla. - Carolina claimed a gold and three silver medals to help Team USA win gold at the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships. Jake Hurysz won the men's 5,000 meters to lead the Tar Heels at the championships, which were held July 22-24 at the Ansin Sports Complex.
Hurysz pulled ahead in the final two laps of the men's 5,000 to take the gold with a personal best time of 14:55.92 while fellow UNC distance standout Isaac Presson took the silver in the men's 1,500 with a time of 3:52.78.
After running a personal best 13.33 in the prelim heats, Roy Smith then came back and lowered that time to 13.24 to take second in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Smith and Eddie Lovett, who took the gold for Team USA, both ran faster than the previous Pan Am meet record. Sandi Morris took second in the women's pole vault at a height of 13-3 1/2.
Team USA won 59 total medals over the three-day meet: 26 gold, 21 silver and 12 bronze. Canada finished second with 14 total medals (six silver and eight bronze) and Brazil took third with 11 medals (three gold, one silver and seven bronze).
