ANN ARBOR, MICH. -
The North Carolina men's golf team opened up its fall campaign at the Wolverine Intercollegiate and is in fifth place after the second round. The Tar Heels fired an even par 284 in the first round followed by a 5-over-par 289 in the second round for a 5-over 573 total. The Tar Heels were led by junior Michael McGowan who carded an even par 142 total and is tied for 13th place.
"We got off to a solid start with the morning round, but lost momentum in the afternoon," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp, who made his debut as Carolina's head coach. "When schools are shooting 6, 8 and 9-under-par, we need to play better then we did to keep up the pace. We need to go out there tomorrow and shoot the best round of the day in hopes of moving up the leaderboard. Everyone needs to improve a few shots tomorrow and we will do just that."
McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., fired a 4-under-par 68 in the morning followed by a 2-over 74 in the afternoon for his 142 total. Freshman Zach Munroe, from Charlotte, N.C., finished just one stroke back at 1-over 143 after rounds of 72-71 and is tied for 16th place. Senior Patrick Barrett and freshman Brandon Dalinka are both tied for 26th with 3-over 145 totals. Barrett, from Pinehurst, N.C., posted rounds of 71-74 while Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., shot 73-72, including an eagle 2 on the par-4 sixth hole. It was close to being a hole-in-one as the ball rolled right over the hole leaving him with a 2-foot putt for eagle. Matt Raudenbush, a senior from Pine Valley, N.J., posted rounds of 74-72 for a 4-over 146 total and is tied for 32nd. Freshman Bailey Patrick, also from Charlotte, is competing as an individual and is also tied for 32nd after firing a pair of 73s for a 4-over 146 total.
California grabbed the lead over the 11-team field with a 12-under-par 556 total after firing rounds of 281-275. Michigan State is five strokes back in second place with a 561 total while Baylor is third at 562, host Michigan is fourth at 568, Carolina is fifth at 573 and Missouri is in sixth place with a 576 total.
Joel Stalter of California grabbed the individual lead with a 7-under 135 total after rounds of 72-63. His 8-under-par 63 in the second round ties the U-M course record as Minnesota's James McLean shot 63 in the second round of the 1999 Wolverine Invitational. Stalter is just one stroke had of Michigan State's Dan Ellis who stands at 6-under 136 with rounds of 70-66. California's Michael Kim and Baylor's Ryan O'Rear are tied for third place at 5-under 137. Chris Mory of Michigan State is alone in fifth place at 4-under 138.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played at U-M Golf Course which features a par 71, 6,887-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
