GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Trips to Penn State and Connecticut as well as the return of a 16-game league campaign highlight the 2011-12 North Carolina women's basketball schedule as announced Tuesday by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina will play 11 televised games in 2011-12, including national broadcasts of the Penn State (Nov. 30, Big Ten Network), Connecticut (Jan. 16, ESPN2), Duke (Feb. 6 and Feb. 26, ESPN2) and NC State (Feb. 19, ESPNU) contests.
The Tar Heels will start the season with an exhibition game against head coach Sylvia Hatchell's alma mater Carson-Newman for the second straight season before hosting defending Big South champion Gardner-Webb in the regular season opener on Nov. 12. Carolina will close out November with a trip to University Park, Pa., to meet Penn State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Other non-conference highlights include a pair of games at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Dec. 18 and 20 against South Carolina and East Carolina and the continuation of the annual home-and-home series with Connecticut in Storrs on Jan. 16.
Carolina opens league play on Jan. 2 at home against Miami before traveling to Virginia on Jan. 5. For the first time since 2004, the ACC will feature a 16-game league campaign. The Tar Heels will play five teams home-and-home - Miami, Virginia, Maryland, NC State and Duke. In addition, Carolina will host Clemson, Boston College and Georgia Tech while traveling to Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Florida State.
Once again in 2012, the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum March 1-4. All 11 games of the tournament will be televised on the ESPN family of networks.
