Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina gymnastics team has received an NCAA Public Recognition Award for having an Academic Progress Rate (APR) among the top 10 percent of all gymnastics teams in the country. NCAA President Mark Emmert sent a letter to head coach Derek Galvin congratulating the Tar Heels on their academic performance.
The gymnastics team was one of seven athletic programs with public recognition awards ranked among the top 10 percent nationally. UNC has the third-most programs ranked in the top 10 percent of their respective sports among Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
"As the head coach, you play a critical role in helping your student-athletes achieve their athletic and academic goals," said Emmert in his letter to Galvin. "The academic success of your team demonstrates your commitment to developing student-athletes and promoting the overall student-athlete experience. Your team has demonstrated its commitment in the classroom and on the playing field, which sets a great example for all students."
