Two days after dropping the first series of the 2012 Fall World Series, the White Team of the University of North Carolina rebounded to take game one of weekend play 14-5. The offense posted runs in all six innings, while junior Shane Taylor threw 4.1 innings to pick up the win.
Freshman Skye Bolt got things started out of the gate for the White Team, roping a double to left field in the game's opening at bat. Michael Russell followed with a double of his own, this time to right field, to put White on top 1-0. Following a wild pitch, senior Cody Stubbs lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to push the score to 2-0.
In the second, freshman Zach Daly walked and stole second, the first of six steals on the day. He came around to score on a Mike Zolk single up the middle, putting the White Team up 3-0.
It was more of the same for the White Team in the third. Bolt walked to lead off the inning and promptly stole second base. Russell followed with a single of his own to score Bolt, before swiping second himself. Following a Stubbs walk, Tom Zengal lined out to shortstop Landon Lassiter. With the runners moving on contact, Lassiter stepped on second and threw down to first to complete the triple play and end the inning.
The offensive barrage continued in the top of the fourth inning for the White Team. Korey Dunbar led off the inning with a walk and added to the stolen base total. After a groundout advanced Dunbar to third, fellow freshman Matt Campbell walked and also stole second base, which ended the day for Blue Team starter Reilly Hovis. Zolk greeted new pitcher Jack Geraghty with another single, driving in two more runs and pushing the score to 6-0.
In the fifth inning, the White Team plated three more runs, this time courtesy of an RBI double by Matt Rubino and an RBI single by Daly.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Blue Team made some noise of their own, touching up White Team starter Taylor for four runs. Lassiter, Colin Moran and Matt Roberts all had RBI hits, while Parks Jordan plated a run with a bases loaded walk.
The White Team ended their night offensively by adding their five final runs in the sixth inning. Bolt doubled again to lead off, his second double of the night. Zengal, Campbell and Zolk all plated runs via hits, while Bolt and Stubbs scored on an error and wild pitch, respectively.
Taylor finished the day throwing 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits and four runs, while striking out four. Mason McCollough pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one.
For the Blue Team, Reilly Hovis took the loss in his first start as a Tar Heel, giving up six runs over 3.2 innings.
