RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team fired a 2-over-par 578 total and is in second place going into the final round of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. The Tar Heels led for most of the two-round day and trails East Carolina by a single shot.
Three Tar Heels, Patrick Barrett, Brandon Dalinda and Clark Palmer, stand tied for fifth place with even-par 144 totals. Barrett, a senior from Pinehurst, N.C., fired a 4-under 68 in the first round in a round that featured five birdies and one bogey. Barrett shot a 4-over 76 in the afternoon round for his 144 total. Sophomore Brandon Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., fired a 1-under 71 in the second round after shooting a 1-over 73 in the morning. Clark Palmer, a senior from Augusta, Ga., fired a pair of 72s on Saturday for his even-par 144 total. Sophomore Bailey Patrick, from Charlotte, N.C. fired an even-par 72 in the second round after carding a 74 in the morning and is tied for 15th place at 2-over 146. Michael McGowan, a senior from Southern Pines, N.C. fired rounds of 75-77 for an 8-over 152 total and is tied for 50th place. Two Tar Heels are competing as an individual. Freshman Keegan Cummings, from Dublin, Ireland, is tied for 32nd place with a 6-over 150 total after rounds of 77-73. Andy Sajevic, a junior from Fremont, Neb., shot 81-72 for a 9-over 153 total and is tied for 52nd.
Carolina is in second place after firing a 1-under 287 in the first round followed by a 3-over 291 in the afternoon for a 2-over 578, just one stroke behind East Carolina's 1-over 577. The Pirates carded a 4-over 292 in the morning followed by a 3-unver 285 in the afternoon. Host NC State is in third place at 11-over 587, nine strokes behind the Tar Heels. Maryland and Western Carolina are tied for fourth place at 13-over 589 to round out the top five.
Andrew McCain of Maryland and J.T. Poston of Western Carolina are deadlocked for the individual lead after two rounds. McCain fired a pair of 71s for a 2-under 142 while Poston scored rounds of 74-68. NC State's Albin Choi and East Carolina's Zach Edmondson are one stroke back at 1-under 143. Choi carded rounds of 74-69 while Edmondson shot 73-70. Seven players are deadlocked in a tie for fifth place at even-par 144, including three Tar Heels - Barrett, Dalinka and Palmer.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Sunday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course which features a par 72, 7,358-yard layout. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
