Zeller Wins Performer of the Week Honors Again

North Carolina forward Tyler Zeller was named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for the second successive time, meriting honors for January 30-February 5, 2012, after leading Carolina to road victories over Wake Forest and Maryland.

Zeller led the Tar Heels to a pair of road victories at Wake Forest and Maryland. He scored a team-high 18 points, grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds and blocked three shots at Wake Forest and led all scorers on both teams with 22 points (in 22 minutes) and had seven rebounds and two blocks in College Park. He averaged 20 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in the two road wins. He made 12 of 25 shots from the floor and 16 of 17 free throws. The 18 rebounds at Wake marked the third time in the last five games he either tied or set a career high.

Freshman Kim Carducci won two individual events and was a runner-up in two other events at the 2012 Virginia Tech Invitational. Carducci won the 50 and 100 freestyles, both in career best times, in 23.61 and 50.85. She also had a career best in the 100 back at 56.28 while finishing at the runner-up in the event.

Freshman Brian Bollerman won three individual events at the 2012 Virginia Tech Invitational. He set career best times in all three events, going 3:52.43 in the 400 IM, 2:00.54 in the 200 breast and 1:50.73 in the 200 IM. He established Christiansburg Aquatics Center pool records in both the 400 IM and 200 breast. Bollerman's time in the 400 IM moved him into eighth place all-time in UNC history in the event. Bollerman has now moved into seventh place this year in the ACC standings in the 200 breast and fifth place in the 400 IM.

Freshman Frank Abbondanza picked up three crucial team points for the Tar Heels with a 5-2 decision over Josh Davis in Carolina's 20-18 win at NC State. Abbondanza, who is giving up nearly 20 pounds per bout, picked up his first win as a heavyweight as he battled Davis to a 2-2 tie after two periods. Abbondanza notched a pair of back points in the third period and added a minute of riding time to earn his first ACC victory. Abbondanza's three points helped provide the advantage in the 20-18 victory.

Senior Tasha Stanley had an outstanding 800 race at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational this Saturday. Stanley ran a personal-best time of 2:04.70, shaving .72 seconds off her previous best time and taking over the No. 7 spot in the event in the NCAA this season. Stanley also ran the 800 leg on the women's distance medley relay Friday, combining with sophomore Lianne Farber and seniors Ashley Verplank and Zoey Russell to finish seventh in a time of 11:21.26. The two-day invitational, held at The Armory in New York, N.Y., is one of the largest and most competitive regular-season meets in the NCAA.

Junior Dylan Moore cleared 7-0 1/4 to win the men's high jump Saturday at the Kent Taylor Invitational, held at UNC's Eddie Smith Field House. Moore's height is now No. 33 so far this season in the NCAA and was just shy of his personal best height of 7-0 1/2.
