NAMPA, Idaho- The University of North Carolina closed out competition at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships as the Tar Heels competed in two more events Saturday. UNC had competitiors in four events over the two-day meet, which was held at the Jacksons Indoor Track outside of Boise, Idaho.
Sophomore Sandi Morris competed in her second NCAA Championships, finishing 11th in the women's pole vault after clearing 13-9 1/4 on her first attempt. Morris also took 11th at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships, although she improved her final height by nearly eight inches this meet, as she cleared 13-1 1/2 last year.
"Sandi competed extremely tough today," assistant head coach Josh Langley said. "She was the last women's vaulter selected at-large, and to come in and finish well ahead of her ranking, I'm very proud of how she did. This should give her a lot of confidence heading into the outdoor season."
The women's 4x400 team of seniors Danielle Brock, Tasha Stanley, Zoey Russell and Elizabeth Mott took ninth with a time of 3:35.20, finishing just .51 seconds out of the top eight. After setting a school record with their automatic qualifying time of 3:33.97 just last week at the Alex Wilson Invitational, the same relay ran the third-best time in school history today. Stanley also competed Friday in the women's 800, placing 14th in the event.
"The relay ran a great race, and they executed a good game plan," assistant coach Davian Clarke said. "There was a lot of tough competition in the event, and they did everything they could have done. I'm proud of how they competed today."
Morris and the women's 4x400 team will all earn Second Team All-America honors for their top-16 performances in their events.
"This was one of the most competitive NCAA Championships I've ever been a part of," Langley said of the meet. "Every single event had tough competition from top to bottom. All of our athletes competed tough, and we're looking forward to getting home and preparing for the ACC Outdoor Championships."
The 2012 outdoor season starts this Friday for Carolina, as the team will compete in the Wake Forest Open on March 16-17, in Winston-Salem. For a complete list of the Tar Heels' outdoor meets, visit TarHeelBlue.com.
