Seniors Honored At Year-End Dinner

CHAPEL HILL --- The North Carolina women's basketball team honored its senior class at a year-end dinner Wednesday night at the Carolina Club. Players, coaches, support staff and family members were on hand to look back on the 2011-12 campaign.
The event also marked a final goodbye for seniors Laura Broomfield, Chay Shegog, She'la White, Candace Wood and head manager Garrett Skillestad.
Wood was presented with the Jan Boxill Award for academics, while freshman Danielle Butts was given the strength and conditioning award by coach Jason Beaulieu.
Shegog was recognized as the team's Overall Champion for receiving the most cumulative points in all of the statistical categories in which totals are kept throughout the season.
Head coach Sylvia Hatchell presented awards to the team's top players in the following categories:
• Best field goal percentage - Shegog
• Best three-point percentage - Brittany Rountree
• Best free throw percentage - Wood
• Most offensive rebounds - Krista Gross
• Most defensive rebounds - Broomfield
• Most passes to the post - Rountree
• Most assists - White
• Most blocks - Shegog
• Most deflections - Gross
• Most steals - Gross
• Most screens - Shegog
• Most dives - Rountree
• Most charges drawn - Shannon Smith
• Most outlets - Broomfield
Shegog was presented with a personalized basketball for reaching 1,000 career points against East Carolina on Dec. 20, while Hatchell was given a ball for winning her 600th game at UNC.
Manager Melanique DeVeaux, who stepped in as a practice player due to widespread injuries and promptly suffered a broken nose, was presented with a personalized game jersey.
