NEW LONDON, N.C.--The University of North Carolina men's golf team is in fourth place at the 2012 ACC Championships held at the Old North State Club. The Tar Heels shot a 6-under par 282 on the first day of the tournament.
"We got off to a great start which is what you need to do on this golf course with two par-5's on the first four holes," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "Other than a couple of 7's, we played really well. It was really nice to see Brandon [Dalinka] finish birdie-eagle - that really helped the team tremendously. We're pleased to have played as well as we did. We just need to come out and play better the next two days and see where we end up."
Junior Michael McGowan, of Southern Pines, N.C., leads the Tar Heels finishing at a 3-under-par 69. McGowan shot five birdies on his way to his eighth-place standing. Freshman Bailey Patrick had a promising start to his first ACC Championship, completing his scorecard at a 2-under-par 70. Patrick shot six birdies but double-bogeyed the 13th hole. Freshman Brandon Dalinka, of Newtown, Pa., is tied for 18th after shooting a 1-under 71. Senior Patrick Barrett shot an even-par 70 in the first round while junior Clark Palmer is at a 2-over 74 to finish out the Tar Heel lineup.
Through the first round of play, No. 11 Georgia Tech leads the field at an 18-under 270. Close behind the Yellow Jackets, in second place, is No. 20 Virginia at a 12-under 276 with No. 24 Florida State placing third at 279. Carolina stands in fourth with a 282 with Wake forest three strokes behind in fifth at 285.
Bo Andrews and Ollie Schniederjans, both from Georgia Tech, are tied with Daniel Berger, of Florida State, for first place after the opening round of play. Each finished with a score of a 6-under-par 66. Lee Bedford of Wake Forest, Ben Kohles of Virginia, and Ben Rusch also of Virginia, are tied for fourth at a 5-under 67. Blake Redmond, of Virginia Tech, stands alone in seventh at 4-under.
The second round of the 2012 ACC Championships tees off Saturday at 8:30 a.m. This year's Championship marks the 16th time the Old North State Golf Club has hosted the tournament. The course features a par 72, 7,102-yard layout. Live updates for all three rounds can be found at golfstat.com.
