NEW LONDON, N.C.-- The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished in seventh place at a 867 after shooting a 10-over-par 298 on a rainy final round of the ACC Championships. Junior Michael McGowan led the Tar Heels tying for 18th place after shooting a 1-under 71. Georgia Tech won the tournament shooting a 27-under-par overall.
"The weather was horrible today and we were not able to make the move we were hoping to in the final round. Michael played a great round of 71 to bounce back from yesterday, which was good to see," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "I feel like our team did make some nice strides this spring and showed improvement. All five of these players will have the opportunity to come back to the ACC's next year and continue to improve. We need to continue to work hard so that next year we can contend for the title."
McGowan regained his swing, shooting three birdies to put him at a 1-under 71 for the day to finish tied for 18th at an overall score of 216. Patrick Barrett, a senior from Pinehurst, N.C., finished the day 2-over-par, tying for 21st overall with a three-round total at 217. Brandon Dalinka and Bailey Patrick struggled on the championship day each ending with a 4-over-par 220 total to tie for 32nd. Clark Palmer, a junior from Augusta, Ga., tied for 43rd after a 5-over-par finish to the tournament.
No. 11 Georgia Tech kept their lead through each day of the ACC Championship, winning by a seven-stroke margin. The Yellow Jackets finished with a 27-under-par 837. Virginia placed second by shooting a 1-over-par 289 on the final day and an 844 total. Florida State shot an even par on championship Sunday, finishing third overall at a 17-under 847. Virginia Tech and Clemson tied for fourth by shooting a 7-under 857. The Hokies were the only team to finish the day under par, coming in at a 1-under 292.
Ben Rusch of Virginia captured first place finishing 3-under for the day and 10-under for the tournament. Lee Bedford of Wake Forest took second, one stroke behind, at a 9-under 207.
