CHAPEL HILL --- No. 8 North Carolina swept the doubles point and got singles wins from Lauren McHale, Caroline Price and Tessa Lyons to defeat No. 31 Florida State, 4-0, Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Carolina stayed perfect in Atlantic Coast Conference play at 7-0 while improving to 17-4 overall. Florida State fell to 11-7, 4-4 in the ACC.
Carolina put together one of its most impressive doubles efforts of the year against the Seminoles, dropping just seven games in sweeping the three matches.
Gina Suarez-Malaguti teamed with Price for an 8-1 victory over Amy Sargeant and Leyla Erkan on court three. No. 71 Haley Hemm and Lyons then clinched the point with an 8-2 victory over Mia Vriens and Carolina de los Santos on court two.
No. 4 Shinann Featherston and McHale then completed the sweep, taking care of Francesca Segarelli and Ruth Seaborne on court one, 8-4. The Tar Heels have now won the doubles point in 10 straight dual matches and have dropped just two matches all season in conference play.
No. 98 Price was first to finish in singles, making quick work of Segarelli on court four, 6-1, 6-2. The Duluth, Ga., freshman is now 15-6 in dual match play and 6-1 in ACC action.
The final two points would be more difficult to come by, as marathon first-set games were the trend in singles.
On court one, No. 33 McHale battled Seaborne to a first-set tiebreak before prevailing, 7-6 (3). McHale then took a 4-1 lead in the second frame and looked to be in control when Seaborne was forced to retire due to injury.
UNC took the final point of the day on court five, where Lyons and Sargeant were engaged in a tight match. Ultimately it was Lyons who would prevail in straight sets, converting her sixth match point of the day to win, 6-3, 6-3.
Featherston, Hemm and Zoe De Bruycker were in the midst of three-setters when play was halted for the day. Featherston was locked in a 2-2 tie with Erkan on court two, while De Bruycker held a 2-1 lead in the final set with Vriens on court three. Hemm, who rallied from 5-1 down to take the opening set from de los Santos, had not yet begun her third set.
Carolina will put its 12-match winning streak and 7-0 ACC mark on the line Saturday when the Tar Heels host No. 7 Miami at 11 a.m.
