UNC Splits Pair At Boston College

CHESNUT HILL, Ma.-- Ally Blake, Constance Orr and Jordan Scarboro each tallied two hits apiece and Lori Spingola tossed four shutout innings as No. 20 North Carolina rolled Boston College, 12-2, in the series opener Saturday afternoon. The Eagles scored three runs in the first inning of game two and edged the Tar Heels, 4-3. The Tar Heels are now 12-4 in ACC play, 39-11 overall.
GAME ONE
Kelli Wheeler, Amy Nece and Blake led off the top of the first with three consecutive singles to load the bases. Haleigh Dickey struck out swinging and Logan Foulks popped up to second base before Constance Orr drove a two-RBI single up the middle. Jordan Scarboro followed with a RBI-single to the shortstop. Kelsey Green later hit a two-run single to right field, pushing the Tar Heels ahead, 5-0.
Nicole D'Argento drew a lead-off walk in the bottom half of the frame and Rene Delegrammaticas singled up the middle. But Spingola struck out two batters and got a third to pop up to wriggle her way out of the jam.
The Eagles loaded the bases again with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, but Spingola was able to get Delagrammaticas to fly out and keep Boston College off the board.
The Tar Heels added a run in the top of the fourth as Mahon was able to score from third base on an error by the Eagles shortstop. Blake then lined a RBI-single to second base to put the Tar Heels on top by seven, 7-0. Foulks roped a double down the left field line to plate another run and Orr followed with a two-run double to left center, increasing the Carolina advantage t0 10-0.
Scarboro blasted a solo home run to right center to lead off the top of the fifth frame. Stephanie Krider followed with a solo home run down the left field line, propelling Carolina to a 12-0 lead. It was the first career home run for freshman infielder from Hiddenite, N.C.
Walker relieved Spingola in the fifth. Spingola (19-8) tossed four shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks en route to her 29th win of the season. The sophomore pitcher from Atlanta, Ga., also struck out seven Eagle batters.
rittany Watkins lined RBI-double up the middle in the bottom of the fifth and later scored on an a Tar Heels error to trim the deficit to 10 runs, 12-2.
Walker threw one inning of relief, surrendering one hit two runs--one earned--and walked two and struck out one batter.
GAME TWO
Ally Blake and Haleigh Dickey both drew walks and Logan Foulks single to left field to load the bases with two outs in the top of the first inning. Morgan Kidd was able to strike out Constance Orr swinging to end the threat.
Ali Lynette-Krech hit a bases-clearing double to right center field in the bottom half of the frame, giving the Eagles an early 3-0 lead.
Constance Orr and Jordan Scarboro both drew a walk to position runners at first and second base with one out in the top of the fourth frame. Lauren Walker struck out swinging and Amber Parrish, who came in to pinch hit for Kelsey Green, popped up to the shortstop, stranding both Tar Heel runners.
Spingola came in to relieve Ashley Bone in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bone (6-2) threw three innings and was credited with the loss, surrendering five hits, three runs, one walk and struck out four.
oston College's C.J. Chirchigno belted a solo home run over the wall in left field in the bottom of the fourth, stretching the Eagle advantage to 4-0.
Freshman Stephanie Krider pinch hit a three-run home run over the center field fence in the top of the sixth, paring the Eagle advantage to one, 4-3.
Spingola tossed three innings of relief, scattering two hits, one run, one walk and struck out four batters.
Krider tallied a home run in each game, both as a pinch hitter. It was only the fourth and fifth career at bats for the freshman from Hiddenite, N.C.
The Tar Heels and Eagles return to the field tomorrow for the series finale at 12 p.m.
