CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Former Tar Heel golfer and coach John Inman has been named to the 2012 class of inductees into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame, announced Thursday in Greensboro, N.C. Before making his way to Chapel Hill, Inman, a native of Greensboro, was the 1980 N.C. High School Athletic Association Individual State Champion while playing for Grimsley High School.
Inman capped off his four-year career as a Tar Heel player by winning the 1984 NCAA Individual Championship and was the recipient of the 1984 Fred Haskins Award as the National Player of the Year. He won five individual titles, including the 1982 ACC Championship, was a three-time All-America (1982-84) and three-time All-ACC performer (1982-84). During Inman's four-year career (1981-84), the Tar Heels captured 15 team titles, including three ACC Championships, and participated in the NCAA Championship all four years, posting three top-10 finishes. Inman was a member of the 1984 World Amateur Team and the 1984 Western Amateur Champion.
Inman served as the head coach of the Tar Heels for 13 years, 1998-99 through 2010-11. During his time at the helm, the Tar Heels won 16 team championships and 11 players captured 16 individual titles. Carolina won the 2006 ACC Championship and two Tar Heels captured the ACC Individual Championship, in 2002 (Dustin Bray) and 2003 (Richard Treis). When Carolina won the conference title in 2006, Inman became the only person to win the ACC title as a player (1982) and a coach. Inman led the Tar Heels to six top-25 finishes. Also, Dustin Bray became the winningest Tar Heel in school history, under Inman's tutelage.
Between his time as a Carolina player and coach, Inman played on the PGA Tour, winning the 1987 Provident Classic and the 1993 Buick Southern Open. He is presently playing on the Nationwide Tour.
The induction of the 2012 class will take place at a banquet on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum. For ticket information, call 336-378-4499.
