July 2, 2012 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- University of North Carolina men's golf head coach Andrew Sapp announced his squad's 2012-13 schedule Monday. The Tar Heel Intercollegiate highlights Carolina's schedule for the 2012-13 season.
"We are very excited about our schedule this coming season," says Sapp. "Some events remain the same, but we also have some new tournaments this year. The highlight of the fall will be when we host the Tar Heel Intercollegiate September 15 and 16. We have such a wonderful course and with our new clubhouse opening in September, it will be a great event to showcase Finley Golf Course. We start by going to the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga., and then play what I call the Triangle Tour where we host our event, play in Duke Tournament and then play in NC State's event. We finish off the fall by going to Dallas to play in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, co-hosted by Baylor and SMU, where we will see some top-ranked teams.
"We have a couple of changes in the spring like going to Auburn and Irish Creek, but we are keeping some of our favorite events like the Puerto Rico Classic, the Seminole and Hootie at Bulls Bay," Sapp continues. "We believe this schedule will help prepare us for the ACCs, NCAA Regionals and the NCAA Championships, which will be in Atlanta next spring."
The Tar Heels tee off their fall campaign September 7-9 at the Carpet Capital Coillegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. They then return home to Chapel Hill to host the Tar Heel Intercollegiate September 15-16. Carolina then plays in two more local tournaments - the Rod Myers Intercollegiate, October 13-14, in Durham and the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, October 19-20, in Raleigh. The Tar Heels round out the fall season by traveling to Dallas, Texas, to play in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate October 29-30.
To begin its spring campaign, Carolina returns to Palmer, Puerto Rico, to play in the Puerto Rico Classic February 17-19. The Tar Heels have three events in March - the Tiger Shootout, March 11-12, in Auburn, Ala.; the Seminole Intercollegiate, March 15-17, in Tallahassee, Fla.; and the Hootie at Bulls Bay Collegiate, March 24-26, in Awendaw, S.C. Carolina will then play in the Irish Creek Intercollegiate April 6-7 in Kannapolis, N.C. before concluding the regular season April 26-28 at the ACC Championships in New London, N.C. The NCAA Regionals will take place May 17-19 and the NCAA Championships will be played May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club, Crabapple Course, in Atlanta, Ga.
The Tar Heels are coming off a year in which they carded eight top-10 finishes, including four in the top-5. Their top finish was a tie for fourth place at the River Landing Intercollegiate and they placed fifth at three events - the Wolverine Intercollegiate, the USF Invitational and the Seminole Intercollegiate.
