August 15, 2012 | Men's Golf
CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, COL.-- Five University of North Carolina golfers, three current team members, are participating in the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship. Michael McGowan leads the Tar Heel contingent after the two rounds of stroke play, but all five failed to advance to match play.
McGowan, a rising senior for the Tar Heels, fired a 4-under-par 66 in the second round of stroke play to finish at 5-over 146 in 100th place. The Southern Pines native fired four birdies at CommonGround Golf Course, two on the front and two on the back, en route to his 4-under 66. The cutoff for Wednesday's opening round of match play was 2-over-par so McGowan missed advancing to match play by three strokes.
Rob Simmons, who played for the Tar Heel 1998-2001, fired a 1-over-par 71 at CommonGround Golf Course to finish at 8-over 149 in a tie for 162nd place. Brandon Dalinka and Matt Crenshaw both carded 150 totals to tie for 180th place. Dalinka, a rising sophomore from Newtown, Pa., posted an 81 at Cherry Hills Country Club while Crenshaw, a member of the 2001-05 Tar Heel teams, fired a 1-over 71 at CommonGround Golf Course. Bailey Patrick, a rising sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., shot a 6-over-par 77 at Cherry Hills to finish at 11-over 152 in a tie for 222nd.
While two courses, Cherry Hills Country Club (par 71) and CommonGround Golf Course (par 70), were used for the two rounds of stroke play, all of match play, which begins Wednesday, will be played at Cherry Hills. The prestigious event will conclude Sunday with a 36-hole championship final.
