UNC student-athletes kicked off the school year Monday evening with the annual Welcome Back picnic, held at the Eddie Smith Indoor Fieldhouse. Tar Heels from all 28 varsity sports were joined by coaches, administrators and staff for a barbecue dinner.

Following the dinner, the freshmen attended their first meeting for CREED, the Baddour Carolina Leadership Academy program designed for first-year students. The kickoff meeting focused on the "C" in CREED, which represents the Culture of Carolina. Baseball coach Mike Fox served as the keynote speaker, speaking about his own experiences being part of the Carolina culture.
