CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team gets its fall campaign underway this weekend at the Carpet Capital Classic in Rocky Face, Ga. The 54-hole event will be played Friday through Sunday at The Farm Golf Club. In Friday's first round, the Tar Heels begin play at 9:12 off the 10th tee.
"We're real excited to be going down to Rocky Face, Ga.," says Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "It's going to be a fantastic field with both last year's national champion and last year's national runner-up among a slew of other great golf teams. It will be a good test right out of the gate. I'm excited about the guys that are going with two newcomers in Andy Knox and Keagan Cummings along with veterans Patrick Barrett, Michael McGowan and Brandon Dalinka. It should be a good group of guys who are playing well and hopefully they'll continue that at The Farm."
McGowan, a senior from Southern Pines, N.C., led the Tar Heels last year. He played in all 11 of Carolina's tournaments, carding eight top-30 finishes. Another senior, Barrett, from Pinehurst, N.C., also played in all 11 of the Tar Heels' tournaments last year and posted six top-25 finishes. Dalinka, a sophomore from Newtown, Pa., played in 10 events last year and carded five top-30 finishes. Junior Knox, from Apex, N.C., will also be in the Tar Heel lineup as will freshman Cummings, from Dublin, Ireland. Knox transferred to Carolina after playing at UNC Greensboro for two years.
After returning home from the Carpet Capital, the Tar Heels turn right around and swing back into action next weekend, September 15-16, when they host the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at UNC Finley Golf Course. After a four-week break, Carolina returns to action October 13-14 for the first of three tournaments in October, the Rod Myers Intercollegiate in nearby Durham. The Tar Heels then travel to Raleigh Oct. 19-20 to play in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and they conclude the fall campaign Oct. 29-30 at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas.
