UNC Swimming Opens Season At Virginia Tech Invitational
October 12, 2013 | Swimming & Diving
CHRISTIANSBURG, VA. - The North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2013-14 seasons Friday night at the Virginia Tech Annual Margaret Soulen Gilbert Breast Cancer Awareness Swim/Dive Meet at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center.
The Tar Heel men went 1-1 on the night, splitting meets with Virginia Tech, a 186-167 setback, while beating VMI. UNC's women's team swept all four of its meets, beating Virginia Tech, Radford, Liberty and James Madison.
"It's great to get our intercollegiate season started. Our women looked sharp and well balanced and I was overall pleased with our results today," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "Of particular note, Ally Hardesty was outstanding today, swimming right off a lifetime best in the 200-yard freestyle and every swim she had today was at or near her lifetime bests.
"We had a lot of winners today - Stephanie Peacock and Emma Nunn both won two events for us," DeSelm continued. "We had some nice relays. We had several relays racing one another over the course of the evening. Overall, I thought it was an excellent chance for us to compete and we are looking to a big trip to Texas next week."
"In the men's meet, it was a close competition between ourselves and Virginia Tech," said DeSelm. "We had too many instances where we did not execute well enough to win the meet. Hopefully, all of us, coaches and athletes, will make the necessary corrections. Despite that, we had some great performances, perhaps highlighted by freshman Jack Nyquist competing in his first collegiate diving contest and performing extremely well against some outstanding divers.
"Despite a flinch on the start of the 100 freestyle, Logan Heck swam well. It was also good to have Dominick Glavich back in the lineup after a red-shirt season last year. I see a lot of promise in our men. We are young and we need to become a more seasoned team quickly to reach our goals." DeSelm concluded.
On the men's side, Carolina won eight of the 19 events in the meet, including victories in two relay events - the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Individual winners for Carolina were freshman Eugene Tee in the 1000-yard freestyle, sophomore Logan Heck in the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Nic Graesser in the 50-yard backstroke, sophomore Dominick Glavich in the 200-yard butterfly, junior Brian Bollerman in the 200-yard breaststroke and sophomore Sam Lewis in the 50-yard butterfly.
The Tar Heel women won 12 of 19 events during the meet. Senior Stephanie Peacock won both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles for the Tar Heels and swam on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. Altogether, the UNC women won three of the four relay events, capturing the 400-yard medley relay and sweeping the two sprint freestyle relays.
Sophomore Emma Nunn joined Peacock as a winner of two events as she took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard individual medley. Sophomore Hannah Lincoln (50-yard freestyle), junior Danielle Siverling (200-yard freestyle), sophomore Ally Hardesty (100-yard freestyle), sophomore Annie Harrison (200-yard backstroke) and senior Cari Blalock (100-yard individual medley) all won single events for Coach Rich DeSelm's squad.
North Carolina returns to the pool next Thursday when it swims a dual meet at the University of Texas at 4 p.m. UNC will also swim at TCU next Saturday at 12 noon. The Carolina women also compete on both Friday and Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Dallas Classic hosted by SMU.
