Tar Heels Swim Texas Tough In Dual Meet Action
October 18, 2013 | Swimming & Diving
AUSTIN, TEXAS - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams battled the homestanding University of Texas squads tough before falling in dual meet action Thursday evening at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
The Longhorns won the men's meet 171.5-126.5, while UT prevailed in the women's meet 171-129.
The Tar Heel men dropped to 1-2 on the season, while the Carolina women lost for the first time and are 4-1. UNC will continue its fall break swing to the Lone Star State on Friday and Saturday. The UNC women will compete in the Dallas Classic at SMU on both Friday and Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. Both Tar Heel teams will swim in dual meet action against TCU Sunday at 12 noon. All times are Central time zone.
"We had our first ever dual meet with the University of Texas and it was a great test for our team. We felt ready to have some improved performances from last week and we had a lot of them," said North Carolina head coach Rich DeSelm.
"In the first half of the men's meet we underachieved," DeSelm said. "I was proud of the team for regrouping in the second half and showing more determination. The men's performances of the meet were Dom Glavich's 200 fly at 1:45.41 and Jack Nyquist winning the three-meter diving contest. In many ways the men were better than last week and we look forward to being even better against TCU on Saturday."
On the men's side, North Carolina individual event winners included sophomore Nic Graesser, sophomore Dominick Glavich, freshman Jack Nyquist and sophomore Logan Heck.
Graesser captured the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 49.15 seconds, while Glavich claimed the 200-yard butterfly in a clocking of 1:45.41. Heck captured the 100-yard freestyle in 45.65 while Nyquist continued the outstanding start to his career with a victory in three-meter diving with a score of 436.58 points.
For the Tar Heel women, Stephanie Peacock won a pair of events for the Tar Heels as the talented senior distance freestyler took top honors in both the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle in times of 4:46.04 and 9:42.95, respectively.
Other individual event winners for Carolina included freshman Sarah Koucheki, junior Danielle Siverling and sophomore Lauren Earp. Koucheki captured top honors in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.57. That time moved her into seventh place all-time on the Carolina all-time Top 10 list. Meanwhile, Siverling notched first place in the 200 free in 1:48.10 and Earp took top honors in the 100 free in 50.59 seconds.
Each Carolina team also won the 400-yard freestyle relay event. The winning men's team, which touched in 3:01.20, included Brad Dillon (45.45), Logan Heck (45.38), Nic Graesser (45.45) and J.T. Stilley (44.92).
Carolina's women took first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a clocking of 3:22.15. The victorious relay included Ally Hardesty (50.70), Danielle Siverling (50.59), Lauren Earp (50.39) and Sarah Koucheki (50.47).
"On the women's side, we had our share of wins. Some individual highlights that stood included Stephanie Peacock bringing her "A" game in her marquee dual meets events (the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles). On short rest after the 1000, she added a fourth place in the 200 free.
"Freshman Sarah Koucheki had a terrific day, highlighted by winning the 200 fly in her career best time. Emma Nunn has been fantastic since this summer, taking care of herself, training and competing on a whole new level. While her individual placings aren't impressive on paper she is swimming lights out. The results of her hard work are evident. Lauren Earp also had some nice relay swims and won the 100 yard freestyle," DeSelm said.
