Farber & Women's XC Named All-Academics

NEW ORLEANS – The USTFCCCA announced the 2012 Division I All-Academic Cross Country women's honorees on Monday, listing UNC's Lianne Farber among those recognized.
"As a new coach, one of the first things you do is identify your team leaders. For women's cross country, that leader is Lianne Farber. Not only did Lianne excel on the cross country course but she achieved in the classroom as well and, in doing so, led our women's team to reach one of our most important goals this year, All Academic recognition," said head cross country coach Mark VanAlstyne, "As I said in our first team meeting, these kind of honors say as much about who we, at Carolina, are as does our athletic performance."
A total of 115 student-athletes represent the 69 institutions that compose the group. Florida State led all schools in the country with five named to the All-Academic list followed by six schools (Kentucky, Duke, Michigan, Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Arkansas) that tallied four on the list.
Eight of the top 10 finishers from the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall earned All-Academic honors. In addition, six of the nine first-place finishers from the fall's NCAA Regional Championships are All-Academic honorees. Twelve reported cumulative GPAs of 4.0 through the fall 2012 semester.
"I am delighted that the women's cross country program has earned this recognition from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The rest of the coaching staff and I take great pride in the academic accomplishments of all of our student athletes," said track and field head coach Harlis Meaders, "Our focus continues to be on the complete development of our student-athletes and we encourage our student athletes to be the best in all they do. Lianne Farber and others continue to demonstrate that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the perfect place for both academic and athletic excellence."
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2012.
In addition to All-Academic honorees, the USTFCCCA also announced those women's teams who earned 2012 Division I All-Academic Cross Country status. The Carolina women's cross country team was among the honored teams.
A total of 200 institutions represent 30 conferences that compose the group. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
