Tar Heel Spotlight: Elly Wagner
March 7, 2013 | Softball
GoHeels.com will be highlighting each Carolina softball player throughout the 2013 season. Today's Tar Heel spotlight is with freshman Elly Wagner, a catcher and outfielder from Pittsburgh, Pa.
GoHeels.com: Best memory of your softball career so far?
Elly Wagner: The best memory of my softball career was when I was on New Jersey Intensity, and we were playing in Disney. Our game was on TV and with runners on first and third, I turned a double play with our short stop and fellow Tar Heel, Kristen Brown. I threw out the runner stealing and then KB threw it right back for the tag out at home!
GH: How did you get started playing softball?
EW: The beginning to my softball career is unique. I was bowling with my friends after school, and one of their mom's was the local rec ball coach. After a game she approached my mom and I, and asked if I had ever thought of playing softball because I had such a strong arm. Before this I had never thought of playing softball, but since then I haven't stopped!
GH: Why Carolina?
EW: Because I loved the family atmosphere and tradition that came with being a Tar Heel, excelling both on the field and in the classroom.
GH: What is your favorite class this semester?
EW: My favorite class this semester would probably be English. It is a lot of work and research, but I enjoy the atmosphere of interacting with my classmates everyday. Class is set up in a workshop format so that you are able to hear other student's opinions and then improve your own work.
GH: What is your dream profession?
EW: To be a part of a Nike design team
GH: Favorite pre-game meal?
EW: I love my desserts, but before games a good power meal I like to eat is penne vodka with chicken.
GH: If you played another sport, what would it be?
EW: I also played basketball in high school and loved it! If I could play another sport that would be it!
GH: What is your walk-up song?
EW: "The Champ" by Nelly
