January 30, 2014 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina gymnastics team will host the University of Pittsburgh at Carmichael Arena this Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The Tar Heels, who defeated EAGL rival Maryland last Sunday 194.700- 192.300, are looking to remain undefeated at home.
The meet is Carolina's annual "Pink Meet" to support breast cancer survivors. The team is proud to partner with UNC's Get Real & Heel program for this annual event and fans are encouraged to wear pink to show your support. You can find more information on this after care program for breast cancer survivors at http://getrealandheel.unc.edu/.
Carolina will enter Friday's meet with a lot of momentum. In addition to Sunday's big win over Maryland, in which every athlete on the UNC roster competed, sophomore Lexi Cappalli was named EAGL Gymnast of the Week for her first place all-around performance. The award was Cappalli's second conference honor of the season. She also won Co-Specialist of the Week during Week One (along with Pittsburgh's Katie O'Rourke). The Heels are now 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the EAGL conference, ranking third.
Top competitors coming into the meet against Pittsburgh include: Cappalli, junior all-arounder Haley Watts (who ranked second in the all-around versus Maryland with a 39.050), Acacia Cosentino (who scored a 9.850 to tie Cappalli for first on bars), Sarah Peterson (who scored a 9.775 on vault to tie Cappalli and Watts for third), and Janell Sargent (who scored a 9.750 to place second overall on beam).
Pittsburgh is undefeated and should prove to be a tough match for the Heels. The Panthers, ranked fourth in the EAGL behind Carolina with a conference record of 2-0, 3-0 overall, is coming off a large margin win against New Hampshire last week.
Next Friday, Feb. 7, North Carolina will head to Chicago for the Chicago Style Invitational at 7:30 p.m.
