October 14, 2014 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is ranked 19th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. This is the first time the Tar Heels have cracked the top 20 since February 2007 when they were 12th in the Golf World/Nike Coaches' Poll.
Carolina won the Tar Heel Intercollegiate earlier this fall and just last weekend UNC was the runner-up at the Rod Myers Invitational. The Tar Heels also placed seventh at the Primland Collegiate Invitational and ninth at the Carpet Capital Classic.
A pair of freshmen, William Register and Ben Griffin, has led the way for the Tar Heels this fall. Register, a native of Burlington, N.C., was the ACC Co-Player of the Month for September and last week he was Golfweek's National Player of the Week. Register won the Primland Collegiate Invitational, setting the school record of record score for 54-hole tournament (199) and vs. par (17-under). He carded two additional top-10 finishes, tying for fourth at the Rod Myers Invitational and tying for sixth at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. Register tied for 18th place at the Carpet Capital Classic, the first event of the fall.
Griffin, from Chapel Hill, won the Tar Heel Intercollegiate by firing a 10-under 206 total. He has two additional top-10 finishes as he tied for eighth at the Rod Myers Invitational and tied for 10th at the Primland Collegiate Invitational. He tied for 23rd place at the Carpet Capital Classic.
The Tar Heels round out their fall campaign Oct. 25-26 at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
