Women 11th, Men 18th at Wisconsin Adidas Invitational

MADISON, WIS. - The University of North Carolina cross country teams faced their toughest competition of the year at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday. The women's team was able to finish in 11th with 382 points while the men finished 18th with 456 points.
The men's field consisted of 36 teams with 19 being ranked. The Tar Heels beat out two top-25 ranked teams in the USTFCCCA polls. The women's team competed with 21 other nationally ranked teams in a field of 40. The women were able to finish in 11th without Lizzy Whelan, a regular in the starting lineup.
Lianne Farber led the Tar Heels finishing in 25th in the 6-kilometer race. She finished at 20:27, less than a minute behind the leader. Annie LeHardy finished seven seconds later and nine places behind Farber. She timed in at 20:34. Freshman Caroline Alcorta finished as the third Tar Heel at 20:51 securing 68th and setting a new personal record. Karley Rempel took 101st and finished in 21:11 setting a new personal record, the second PR of this season. Rounding out the top five was Hannah Christen who finished 167th with a time of 21:47.
On the men's side it was Ryan Walling who finished as the top male runner for the Tar Heels in the 8-kilometr race. Walling placed 33rd timing in at 24:11. Stephen Mulherin continues to have an impressive season once again setting a new personal record at 24:25, taking 45 seconds off his personal record. Seniors Pat Schellberg and John Raneri took 75th and 122nd respectively. Schellberg ran 24:28 and Raneri finished in 24:46. Scott Morgan finished in 176th at 25:11 as the last scoring Tar Heel.
North Carolina will continue its season on Oct. 31 at the ACC Cross Country Championships in Charlottesville, Va. The women's race will begin at 10 a.m., with the men following at 10:45 a.m. Both races will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Performances and results will be available on Goheels.com at the conclusion of the meet.
