October 30, 2014 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is ranked 11th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and 15th in the latest Golfstat Rankings. Earlier this month when the Tar Heels cracked the top 20, it marked the first time UNC had done so since February 2007 when they were 12th in the Golf World/Nike Coaches' Poll.
Carolina captured the championship at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C. last weekend as four Tar Heels knotted top-15 finishes. Freshman Ben Griffin came from four strokes down entering the final round to win by one. After a 74 in the first round, he finished strong with rounds of 7-under 65 and 5-under 67 for a 10-under 206 total. Freshman William Register finished alone in 4th place with a 6-under 210 total. Senior Brandon Dalinka and sophomore Henry Do tied for 12th place at 2-over 218.
Earlier this fall, Carolina won the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and was the runner-up at the Rod Myers Invitational. The Tar Heels also placed seventh at the Primland Collegiate Invitational and ninth at the Carpet Capital Classic.
The freshmen duo of Griffin and Register has led the way for the Tar Heels this fall. Griffin, from Chapel Hill, N.C., has two wins - in addition to winning the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, he also won the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. Register, a native of Burlington, N.C., was the ACC Co-Player of the Month for September and Golfweek's National Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 7. Register won the Primland Collegiate Invitational, setting the school record for 54-hole tournament score (199) and vs. par (17-under). He carded two additional top-10 finishes, tying for 4th at the Rod Myers Invitational and tying for 6th at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. Griffin also had two additional top-10 finishes, tying for 8th at Primland and tying for 10th at the Rod Myers Invitational.
Griffin and Register have had strong support from the rest of the team. Dalinka led the way at the Carpet Capital Classic as he tied for 10th place. He also tied for 6th at Rod Myers and tied for 12th at Bridgestone. Another senior, Bailey Patrick, tied for 9th place at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate.
The Tar Heels have concluded their fall campaign. They tee off the spring season Feb. 2-3 at the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
