Carolina Hosts Appalachian State In Midweek Tilt

CHAPEL HILL ---After splitting a pair of weekend series to start the 2014 season, No. 17 North Carolina welcomes in-state foe Appalachian State for its first midweek game of the year Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels are 3-3 after a dramatic series win over Xavier last weekend, while the Moutaineers are 0-7 after a three-game sweep at NC State. North Carolina-Appalachian State Series History
• North Carolina is 23-3 all-time against Appalachian State in a series that dates back to 1974.
• The Tar Heels have won 13 in a row in the series, including 12 straight under head coach Mike Fox.
• The two teams last met in 2013, a 2-0 Carolina win in Chapel Hill on May 14. Appalachian State's last victory in the series came in 1997, an 11-10 win in 10 innings at Boshamer Stadium.
• Reilly Hovis got the win in last year's meeting, as the then-freshman right-hander combined with Chris McCue and Chris Munnelly to hold the Mountaineers to just one hit.
Fresh Faces Seeing Major Time Early
• Eight true freshmen made their collegiate debuts in the opening series at the College of Charleston, with a high of six freshmen starting the series finale.
• C Adrian Chacon, 1B Joe Dudek, 2B Wood Myers and RF Tyler Ramirez started all three games at Charleston, while DH Adam Pate and starting RHP Zac Gallen started the finale on Feb. 17.
• A pair of relief pitchers also debuted at Charleston as RHP Spencer Trayner and LHP Zach Rice both appeared out of the bullpen. Trayner got his first career win Sunday against Xavier with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
• Gallen's first two starts have been outstanding, as the Gibbsboro, N.J., product has allowed just two earned runs in 13.1 innings of work.
