Track and Field Wraps up Armory Collegiate Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., - The University of North Carolina track and field teams wrapped up the last day of competition at the Armory Collegiate Invitational with strong performances from many Tar Heels. AJ Hicks headlines the team with a fifth-place finish in the men's championship weight throw and the fourth-best throw in UNC Indoor history at 64-6 ½ (19.67 meters).
Jack Driggs competed in the men's championship mile where he took third and crossed the finish line at 4:10.81.
In the men's championship 3,000 meter run, Pat Schellberg finished sixth with a time of 8:06.28.
O'Neal Wanliss came close to putting his name in the UNC Indoor records book after posting a 1:50.86 time in the men's championship 800. Wanliss's time was good enough for seventh at the meet.
In the men's championship qualifying 400, Sean Sutton placed fourth after posting 47.82 while Javonte Lipsey took eight at 48.25. Both qualified for the championship finals, but Sutton was held out just as a precaution. Lipsey finished fourth in the finals at 48.18.
Sutton also competed in the men's championship 200 where he ran a 21.75 and finished 11th.
Avana Story threw in the women's championship weight throw and finished 12th out of 57 at a distance of 55-2.
Tristine Johnson also finished twelfth, but in the women's championship triple jump. She jumped a distance of 40-2 ¾.
Karley Rempel competed in the women's championship mile where she placed 13th after posting a 4:53.33 time.
Many other Tar Heels competed in the college divisions for each event. Joe Sansone and Matt Valeriani competed in the 3,000 where they finished fifth and sixth respectively. Sansone finished at 8:18.74 and Valeriani set a new PR at 8:21.02. Malia Cali took eighth in the 5,000 at 17:28.02 and beating out 19 other competitors. Mike Jacobs took 14th in the mile with a time of 4:19.90. Cory Nicholls ran 1:54.71 in the 800 and finished 19th.
The Tar Heels will split up and spread across the country next weekend as the teams are competing in three separate meets. The track and field program will compete in the UCS Invitational, New Mexico Invitational and the University of Washington Classic. Each meet starts on Friday, Feb. 14 and ends on Saturday, Feb. 15.
