Carolina-Duke Round 2 Sunday On ESPN
March 1, 2014 | Women's Basketball
A North Carolina (21-8, 9-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) win on Sunday would mark the first regular season sweep of the Blue Devils since the 2007-08 season. In the first meeting of the season on Feb. 10, Diamond DeShields scored 30 points to silence a hostile Duke crowd in an 89-78 win at Cameron Indoor Stadium. That night she became the first player since 2009 to score 30 points against Duke.
Fellow freshman Allisha Gray also had a big night with a 24-point, 10-rebound performance. Xylina McDaniel was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in scoring 17 points. The first 12 came in the first half as Carolina staked itself to a 45-36 advantage at the intermission.
The Tar Heels bombed away from distance all night long, making 12 shots from three-point range, never trailed in the game, and built three separate double-digit leads in the second half and finally made the third one stand.
Duke was paced by Elizabeth Williams' career-best 28-point effort. Tricia Liston added 20 in the loss.
The first 1,000 students in attendance will receive a Carolina blue 'Keep Calm and Beat Duke' shirt. The first 250 kids (under 14) will eat for free at Carmichael Arena.
At halftime, a special check presentation will be featured from the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.
The pairings for the ACC Tournament will be announced Sunday evening at the conclusion of the final day of the league's regular season.
