Men Golfers 5th At Seminole Intercollegiate

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is in fifth place after the first round of the Seminole Intercollegiate. The Tar Heels fired a 5-over-par 293 on Friday and were led by juniors Brandon Dalinka and Bailey Patrick who fired an even par 72.
"We had solid play by Brandon and Bailey," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. The wind was strong in the afternoon and 72 was a good score. We really rallied on #16 counting three birdies and an eagle by Keagan so that helped us finish well. We are looking forward to improving on our play tomorrow. Due to the weather forecast of storms on Sunday, the tournament committee has decided to play 36 holes tomorrow to complete the event."
Dalinka and Patrick are tied for 10th place in the individual race. Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., carded three birdies and three bogeys while Patrick, from Charlotte, N.C., carded three birdies, one bogey and one double bogey. Keagan Cummings, a sophomore from Dublin, Ireland, fired an eagle-3 on the par-5 16th hole. He also carded three birdies, one bogey and one double for a 2-over 74 and is tied for 24th place. Freshman Henry Do, from Canton, Mich., shot a 4-over 75 and is tied for 34th along with Andy Sajevic, from Fremont, Neb., who is competing as an individual. Rounding out the team scores is Davis Bateman, a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., who struggled with an 8-over 80 and is tied for 67th.
Mercer leads the field of 13 teams by firing a 6-under-par 282 in the first round. James Madison is five strokes back in second place at 1-under 287. South Florida is third at 1-over 289 while host Florida State is fourth at 2-over 290 and the Tar Heels are in fifth place at 5-over 293. Coastal Carolina stands in sixth place at 7-over 295, Mississippi State is seventh at 9-over 297 and Penn State and Winthrop are tied for eighth place at 13-over 301.
Trey Rule of Mercer fired a 3-under-par 69 in the first round to grab the individual lead. Four players are one stroke back in a tie for second place at 2-under 70 - Coastal Carolina's Ben Wheeler, James Madison's Jon Weiss, Mercer's Hans Reimers and Florida State's Jack Maguire. Four more players are tied for sixth place at 1-under 71 - Mercer's James Beale, George Washington's Michael Heda, Mississippi State's Chad Ramey and South Florida's Trey Valentine. There are nine players, including Carolina's Dalinka and Patrick, deadlocked in 10th place at even par 72.
The final two rounds of the 54-hole event will be played Saturday at Southwood Golf Course which features a par 72, 7,172-yard layout. There will be an 8:30 shotgun start. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
