Carolina Finishes First Day of NCAA Indoors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of North Carolina track teams competed in three events on the first day of competition at the NCAA Indoor Championship.
The women's distance-medley relay team competed in the only event that was a final event for UNC. The team of Lianne Farber, Cori Floyd, Karley Kempel and Annie LeHardy finished in eleventh place with a time of 12:14.55.
Lizzy Whelan and LeHardy both competed in the women's mile semifinals where Whelan finished eighth with a time of 4:43.11 and qualified for the final. LeHardy finished 16th at 5:02.12. Whelan is one of 10 individuals to advance to the final.
In the men's mile semifinal, Isaac Presson just missed advancing to the final by 0.07 seconds. He crossed the line at 4:04.93 and finished seventh in his heat.
North Carolina did not score any team points on day one but will look to improve tomorrow. On the men's side Oregon is in first with 24 points. Arizona and Stanford take second and third with 16 and 14 points respectively. One point behind Stanford is Florida with 13 points. In a three way tie for fifth with 12 points are Oklahoma St, Arkansas and Alabama.
On the women's side Stanford holds on to the top spot at 22 points. Florida trailing by three with 19 and Texas A&M is in third with 16. In fourth with 13 points is South Dakota, and Georgia rounds out the top five at 11.50 points.
The meet will continue tomorrow where UNC shot thrower Sarah Howard will compete for the first time as well as the men's 4x400 meter relay team. Whelan will compete in the finals of the women's mile tomorrow too.
