Dalinka Is Third At Irish Creek After Second-Round 68

KANNAPOLIS, N.C- The Tar Heel men golfers traveled to The Club at Irish Creek for the first two rounds of the Irish Creek Collegiate Saturday. Tar Heel junior Brandon Dalinka had two solid rounds to end the day in a tie for third place with a 2-under 140 total in the tournament. Carolina ended the first day in eighth place at 13-over-par 581.
Newtown, Pa. native Dalinka carded a 1-over-par 72 first round followed by a 3-under 68 second round with five front-nine birdies and a two-bogey back. Junior Robert Register, competing at Irish Creek as an individual, finished as the next best Tar Heel after the second round with two 1-over 72 rounds Saturday. Register, from Burlington, N.C., heads into Sunday in a tie for 16th with a 144 total. Sophomore Keagan Cummings from Dublin, Ireland, finished in a tie for 27th with five birdies, six bogeys, and a double in the second round to finish at 4-over 146 overall. He shot a 1-over 72 in the first round. Freshman Henry Do, from Canton, Mich., ended Saturday with a 74 and 73 in the first two rounds in a tie for 36th place at 147. Although he had three straight birdies on the front in the first round, he only birdied #6 in the second round. Bailey Patrick shot a 7-over 149 overall to finish Saturday in a tie for 52nd. Patrick, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., shot two birdies, two bogies, and two double-bogies in the second round and a triple-bogey on #12 in the first round, along with four birdies and three bogeys. Senior Andy Sajevic from Fremont, Neb. had a tough first round with a 7-over 78 total but rebounded in the second round to shoot a 3-over 74 with four birdies to head into Sunday in a tie for 69th with a 152 total. The other individual competing in the tournament, Zach Martin, shot a 15-over 157 total on Saturday to end in a tie for 85th. Martin is a freshman from Pinehurst, N.C.
Though for much of the day host Charlotte was atop the leaderboard, North Florida ended Saturday with a 2-over 570 total with a 5-under second round to put them in a tie for first with Georgia State. Georgia State shot a 4-over first round followed by a 2-under second round. Charlotte sits in third at 3-over 571 after an even-par second round. Duke sits six shots back at 9-over 577 in fourth place, followed by Ohio State in fifth at 11-over 579. Wake Forest and Notre Dame are close behind at 12-over 580, followed by North Carolina in eighth, East Carolina at 15-over in ninth, and Appalachian State at 16-over 584 in 10th.
MJ Maguire from North Florida is co-leading the tournament with Thomas Rowland from Charlotte at 5-under 127. Maguire shot the best second round with a 7-under, 64 with a bogey-free card that consisted of five birdies and an eagle. Carolina's Brandon Dalinka sits three shots back at 2-under 140, along with J.J. Grey of Georgia State, Niall Platt of Notre Dame, and Boo Timko of Ohio State. Akron's Charlie Bull sits in a tie for seventh at 1-under 141, along with Wake Forest's Clancy Waugh, Georgia State's Davin White, and Duke's Motin Yeung. Frederik Hammer of Ohio State and Payne McLeod of UNCW are the only other players at even-par or better; they sit in 11th place at even-par 142.
The 54-hole Irish Creek Collegiate is being played at The Club at Irish Creek Course which features a par 71, 7,099-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com and GoHeels.com. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the final round.
