September 24, 2014 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The North Carolina men's golf team is ranked number 17 in the country, according to Golfweek.com.
The latest rankings, released Tuesday, show that the Tar Heels have a 70.20 power rating, which is calculated with a team's record and based on performance against other teams and players. Carolina has five wins against the Top 50 and 13 wins against the Top 100 so far this season with an overall record of 22-8, according to Golfweek.
"Rankings are nice, but the season is not even a month old yet," said Head Coach Andrew Sapp. "Being ranked this early just shows that we have played well to start the season which is great. We just need keep doing what we are doing."
This season, the Tar Heels started strong, finishing 9th in their opening tournament, the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga., in early September. Senior Brandon Dalinka from Newtown, Pa., finished in a tie for 10th at 4-under-par 212, while the team finished at 3-under 861 with a 4-under 286 final round.
The Tar Heels also took home a victory at their home tournament, the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at UNC Finley Golf Course last weekend. The team dominated the tournament with a 26-under 838 total, 23 shots better than the rest of the field. Ben Griffin, a freshman from Chapel Hill, also took home his first collegiate title with a 10-under 206 score.
The team will return to action next week at the Primland Collegiate Invitational in Meadows of Dan, Va., September 29-30. Live scoring will be available on GoHeels.com.
