Carolina came back from a 13-point, second-half deficit to beat No. 5 Louisville last Saturday. Marcus Paige hit a layup from the left side with 8.5 seconds to play and the Cardinals missed a pair of late shots at the other end.
North Carolina State beat Duke on Sunday in Raleigh, shooting 55.0 percent from the floor in the process (including 58.1 percent in the second half) while holding Duke to 34.3 percent in the second half and 36.9 percent overall. NCSU hit 10 of 16 three-pointers as a team while holding Duke to 7 of 27 (25.9 percent).
The Wolfpack is 3-1 in ACC play with home wins against Wake Forest, Pitt and Duke and a road loss at Virginia.
The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with North Carolina State, 150-76, and have won three in a row against NCSU. Last year, Carolina beat the Wolfpack in both Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The teams split a pair of meetings in 2012-13 with each squad winning at home. Carolina has won 16 of the last 17, 22 of the last 24 and 39 of its last 48 games against NC State.
Carolina is 59-45 all-time against NC State in Raleigh, including an 11-4 mark in PNC Arena.
Last year in Raleigh, Paige scored a career-high 35 points, including 31 after halftime, to lead the Tar Heels to an 85-84 overtime win over the Wolfpack. It was the first time a UNC-N.C. State game was decided by a single point since a 45-44 Carolina victory in Reynolds Coliseum on Feb. 12, 1997.
Last year in Chapel Hill, James Michael McAdoo had 16 points and 13 rebounds as Carolina beat N.C. State for the 11th time in a row in Chapel Hill (on Feb. 1, 2014).
This year, the Tar Heels are 1-0 on the road in the ACC after their win at Clemson earlier this month. Roy Williams' ACC road winning percentage of .649 is second-best in conference history behind Vic Bubas of Duke (.667 from 1960-69). Williams's teams are 59-32 on the road in ACC play in 12 seasons, including a 5-4 mark in 2013-14 (for UNC's eighth above-.500 road record in 11 years under Williams).
After Wednesday's game, Carolina will host Virginia Tech on Sunday, visit Wake Forest next Wednesday and host Florida State and Syracuse in a three-day span on Jan. 24 and 26, respectively.
